Deliverable 2.1 Economic, Market and Business Analysis Methodology
The overall objective of DataBench is to provide benchmarks and performance evaluation mechanisms to identify the business impact and industrial significance in Big Data Technologies (BDT) benchmarking providing operational support to the BDV cPPP (Big Data Value contractual Public-Private Partnership) and the European Big Data industry. The results of the project will help European organizations developing BDT to reach for excellence by measuring their technology development activity against parameters of high business relevance, improving their competitiveness.
This deliverable describes the methodological approach which will be used by DataBench to implement the economic, market and business analysis required by the project.
The main steps of the methodology designed in this report include:
• The comprehensive economic and market analysis of BDT in Europe and their diffusion by industry sector, based on the desk research of main public sources and IDC databases;
• The definition of the main classification parameters of use cases in order to allow for their analysis and assessment by industry, by type of technology solution, by type of business process;
• The approach to the monitoring and measurement of the actual and emerging needs of industrial users, in terms of benchmarking the technical and business impacts of BDTs, which will be based on an ad-hoc survey of a representative sample of European organizations;
• The outline of the methodology of business evaluation of use cases, including the typology of KPIs to be measured, the dimensions of the analysis of data-driven business processes, and the criteria of selection of the sample of case studies which will be implemented.
Abstract
At the heart of the DataBench project is the goal to design a benchmarking process helping European organizations developing Big Data Technologies to reach for excellence and constantly improve their performance, by measuring their technology development activity against parameters of high business relevance. DataBench will investigate existing Big Data benchmarking tools and projects, identify the main gaps, provide a robust set of metrics to compare technical results coming from those tools. It will provide a framework to associate those technical results with the economic processes that are imperative to a company. It will provide a robust set of benchmarks to assess which tools respond best and provide the most pertinent information for organisation’s economic planning and respond to their current and emerging industrial needs. It will provide a software tool which the industrial and research community users can leverage to do this evaluation. DataBench will interact with ICT14 and 15 projects to give access to this tool and framework to leverage the Big Data benchmarking investment so far carried out in the benchmarking community, contributing to the success of the BDV-PPP. The project envisions continuous interaction with the leading BDT suppliers and international industrial benchmarking user communities and has a strong relationship with the BDV cPPP. This deliverable aims at describing the methodological approach which will be used by DataBench to implement the economic, market and business analysis required by the project. This methodology will serve to assess the European and industrial significance of the benchmarking technologies examined by DataBench. These are critical concepts in the project and they must be clearly defined because they provide the cornerstone for the desired recognition and acceptance of the benchmarks by the industrial community.
